POLICE OFFICER

POSITION SUMMARY

Fargo Police Officers are responsible for a broad range of policing duties aimed at ensuring the safety and security of individuals and property within The City of Fargo. Core responsibilities include patrolling assigned areas, enforcing traffic laws and conducting investigations.


Officers operate under the general supervision of a Sergeant, who may not be physically present during incidents, but remains accessible via electronic communication. The role frequently requires swift decision-making in high-risk situations that may pose significant danger to individuals or property, as well as considerable legal liability.


Since much of the work is performed independently, Officers are expected to rely on their comprehensive training, departmental policies and relevant laws to guide their actions and determine the most appropriate response in any given scenario.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Assigned to a designated area of The City to enforce all laws and regulations, to provide security, to detect violators, and to develop positive relationships with residents, businesses, schools and students in assigned neighborhoods. Coordinates the services of different governmental and private agencies to resolve identified problems.
  • Receives, prioritizes and responds to non-emergency calls.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as accidents, medical emergencies, fire scenes and other emergencies and performs various other tasks to secure the scene and assist other emergency personnel.
  • Conducts detailed investigations of criminal activities and public safety incidents.
  • Participates as a team member with officers, supervisors and citizens to identify and prioritize problems, develop and implement solutions, and evaluate results. Organizes resources within the community, the police department and other agencies to reduce crime and meet the appropriate needs of the community.
  • Maintains records of activities and prepares reports to provide information to investigators and/or prosecutors.
  • Testifies in court proceedings to present evidence and to give personal account of incident/crime as needed.
  • Maintains firearms and other equipment issued.
  • Attends all required training classes and completes testing, certifications as required.
  • Performs all job duties in compliance with safety guidelines and with an ongoing awareness of safety practices.
  • Communicates courteously and professionally and maintains working relationships with others in carrying out job functions.

EDUCATION:

  • A minimum of sixty (60) semester hours or ninety (90) quarter credits of post-high school education at an accredited college, university or technical school is required to become a fully licensed Police Officer in Fargo, North Dakota.
  • Military service may be used in lieu of the education requirement. To qualify, the applicant must have completed at least four years of full-time active-duty service in the U.S. Armed Forces and received
    an Honorable Discharge. Acceptable documentation includes a DD Form 214 (Member 4 copy) verifying both the length of active service and the character of discharge.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be 21 years old upon completion of The Fargo Police Academy.
  • Must be a United States Citizen.
  • Must have no prior Felony convictions (Automatic Disqualifier) – Misdemeanor Offenses and anything on a Juvenile Record is examined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Knowledge of current police procedures and techniques and their appropriate application in various situations.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid/life-saving techniques.
  • Knowledge of principles of investigation
  • Knowledge of city ordinances, state and federal laws, regulations and codes relating to law enforcement activities and criminal law.
  • Specialized certification may be required for specialized areas of training, e.g., State Firearms Certification.
  • Skill in effective and proper operation and maintenance of various weaponry/equipment used in police activities and the ability to complete required in-service firearms training and scheduled qualification.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms and have good public relations skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage time effectively.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful situations.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

Police Officers spend the majority of their time in the field on patrol. Officers are required to carry a firearm, wear protective body armor and follow appropriate safety protocols. While on patrol or responding to crime scenes, Officers may be exposed to various hazards, including injury, trauma, confrontations with angry or violent individuals, animal bites, blood-borne and airborne pathogens, traffic accidents, emotionally distressing situations, toxic substances and adverse weather or road conditions.

A significant portion of each day is spent in a patrol vehicle, with frequent entry and exit throughout the shift. While on patrol, Officers must maintain consistent situational awareness and attention to detail. Accuracy and focus are also essential when completing reports and meeting documentation deadlines. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Police Officers must be able to meet the physical demands and requirements set forth by the North Dakota Peace Officer Training Board (P.O.S.T.) to qualify for and maintain certification as a licensed peace officer.

This is classified as Heavy Work. Police Officers must be capable of climbing ladders, walking or running on uneven surfaces and dragging up to 185 pounds for a distance of 50 feet. Duties may also involve occasional lifting, pushing or pulling of up to 100 pounds, frequent lifting or pushing/pulling of up to 50 pounds and regular movement of objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

Officers are required to wear approximately 24 pounds of duty equipment, depending on their assignment. Officers must be able to perform a variety of physical tasks, including climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, using fine motor skills and maintaining sensory acuity such as hearing, speaking and visual observation.

  • No. The Fargo Police Department provides its own paid academy training to each of its new hires. The Fargo Police Academy is an 18-week training program fully certified by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (NDPOST).
  • In 2022, The Fargo Police Department began hiring candidates prior to the academy. Candidates are now applying for a job as a Fargo Police Officer rather than just completing the Academy as a standalone.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The Fargo Police Training and Development Unit will help you determine the best start date for you.
