School Resource Officer

special assignment Summary

Assigned to a specific school(s) to assist with maintaining a safe school environment. Provides law enforcement information and advice to students, parents, and school staff. Assists school staff with criminal issues as well as discipline and behavior issues. Works to prevent assaults, drug activity, and criminal activity within the school setting and addresses criminal and nuisance complaints.

 

DISCLAIMER: Must be a member of the Fargo PD for 2-3 years before special assignment

becoming a school resource officer

  • Works in close collaboration with school principal and other administrators. Functions under the guidelines and policies of the Fargo Police Department as well as school policies, understanding which take precedent in cases where department and school standards may differ. Works independently, maintains an office at assigned school. Coordinates schedule with sergeant to ensure availability for after school events. May substitute for other Officers as needed. 
  1. Maintains visibility on school grounds by patrolling hallways, parking lots, building and grounds.
  2. Monitors situations and intervenes where necessary.
  3. Attends after-school events such as sporting events, school dances and senior all-night parties
  4. Addresses school discipline issues with appropriate school staff
  5. Conducts investigations on assaults, drugs, vandalism, theft. etc.
  6. Collects evidence, reviews, interviews students, and meets with parents
  7. Conducts classroom instruction and presentations in schools for students, parents, teachers and the community
  8. Meets with parents in their homes. Coordinates visits with social services as necessary and assists the school principal on home visits related to truancy
  9. Takes students into protective custody when necessary
  10. Attends juvenile court when necessary

Working Conditions:

  • School Resource Officers spend more time in schools and less driving time than patrol officers. All the physical demands and working conditions of a patrol officer apply within this assignment.

  • No. The Fargo Police Department provides its own paid academy training to each of its new hires. The Fargo Police Academy is an 18-week training program fully certified by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (NDPOST).
  • In 2022, The Fargo Police Department began hiring candidates prior to the academy. Candidates are now applying for a job as a Fargo Police Officer rather than just completing the Academy as a standalone.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The Fargo Police Training and Development Unit will help you determine the best start date for you. 

There’s several helpful ways to prepare for our hiring process:

  1. First, an in-person meeting with a recruiter is a great opportunity to learn more about the agency and get helpful advice on interviewing and the hiring process as a whole.
  2. Second, a ride-along with one of our Officers is a great way to gain exposure to our department and what our Officers do on a day-to-day basis. A recruiter can help set up a ride-along on a date and time most convenient for you.
  3. Third, take a look through our social media channels and their content. There you will find great insight into our academy and department.
