THE CITY OF FARGO

Fargo isn’t just where we work — it’s where we live, serve and grow. Founded in 1871 as a frontier settlement on the banks of the Red River, Fargo has evolved into North Dakota’s largest and most vibrant city. With a population of over 135,000 residents and a land area of just over 50 square miles, Fargo blends small-town values with urban energy.

Today, Fargo is a dynamic and fast-growing community driven by a strong local economy, low unemployment and a commitment to innovation. Whether it’s a bustling downtown, world-class healthcare or nationally ranked universities like North Dakota State University, Fargo offers opportunities for both individuals and families to thrive.

CITY LEADERSHIP IN ACTION

The City of Fargo operates under a commission form of government, with a mayor and four at-large commissioners working to shape city policy and oversee operations. Mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney serves as the liaison to The Fargo Police Department and works directly with Chief Dave Zibolski to ensure public safety initiatives align with community needs and expectations.

City departments collaborate to maintain safe, inclusive and forward-thinking neighborhoods — ensuring officers have the tools and support needed to serve effectively.

There’s several helpful ways to prepare for our hiring process:

  1. First, an in-person meeting with a recruiter is a great opportunity to learn more about the agency and get helpful advice on interviewing and the hiring process as a whole.
  2. Second, a ride-along with one of our Officers is a great way to gain exposure to our department and what our Officers do on a day-to-day basis. A recruiter can help set up a ride-along on a date and time most convenient for you.
  3. Third, take a look through our social media channels and their content. There you will find great insight into our academy and department.
