Administrative Officer

Special assignment summary

Assigned to Administrative Services to assist with administrative duties. Assigned to the Administrative Sergeant, but also receives direction from the Training Sergeant. Assist with hiring, recruiting, training, and training record management. Target Solutions administration evidence, video purging, firearms administrative procedures, and other administrative needs.


DISCLAIMER: Must be a member of the Fargo PD for 2-3 years before special assignment

becoming an Administrative officer

  1. Serves as the primary pre-hire background investigator for police candidates.
  2. Serves as a primary squad training instructor, to include the topics of firearms and defense tactics.
  3. Conducts administrative background checks on all firearms to include firearm tracing, determining ownership, lawful possession and proper court dispositions.
  4. Serves as a police department administrator of the City of Fargo’s web-based training and information platform (Target Solutions).
  5. Assists, fulfills the duties associated with the property room.
  6. Represents the police department at in-town and out-of-town recruiting events.
  7. Conducts pre-screen interviews of police candidates.
  8. Purges in-car video files in accordance with policy and statutes of limitation.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Two years of experience as a Fargo Police Officer
  • Certified by the North Dakota POST Board for peace officer instruction, or the ability to become certified

Working Conditions:

  • The Administrative Officer works primarily in an indoor setting including an office and training environment. Training and recruiting may require the officer to stand for extended periods. All the physical demands and working conditions of a patrol officer apply within this assignment.

  • No. The Fargo Police Department provides its own paid academy training to each of its new hires. The Fargo Police Academy is an 18-week training program fully certified by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (NDPOST).
  • In 2022, The Fargo Police Department began hiring candidates prior to the academy. Candidates are now applying for a job as a Fargo Police Officer rather than just completing the Academy as a standalone.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The Fargo Police Training and Development Unit will help you determine the best start date for you. 

There’s several helpful ways to prepare for our hiring process:

  1. First, an in-person meeting with a recruiter is a great opportunity to learn more about the agency and get helpful advice on interviewing and the hiring process as a whole.
  2. Second, a ride-along with one of our Officers is a great way to gain exposure to our department and what our Officers do on a day-to-day basis. A recruiter can help set up a ride-along on a date and time most convenient for you.
  3. Third, take a look through our social media channels and their content. There you will find great insight into our academy and department.
