Training Officer

Special assignment summary

The Police Training Officer provides training to police personnel on multiple law enforcement topics. The training officer assists with the scheduling of training as well as making sure instructors are available for each training date. The Training Officer assists the training sergeant with records management and training certifications.

becoming a training officer

  1. Assists Training Sergeant by monitoring training status of all police department personnel and ensures that they are compliant with POST Board requirements as well as departmental training requirements.
  2. Provides training to officers to ensure proper understanding and execution of police duties in accordance with established procedures and standards.
  3. Participates in recruiting efforts with regional colleges as well as police academies. This includes working with faculty and staff of colleges, interacting with students at academic facilities and attending career fairs throughout the region.
  4. Assists with applicant testing.
  5. Responsible for FRTC building maintenance and assists with firearms range repair.

Requirements:

  1. Qualifications are the same as for other Police Officers
  2. Skill in organization and administration of programs
  3. Skill in records management 

Working Conditions:

  • Physical demands and working conditions are the same as for other Police Officers. Work is normally performed in the office. Physical demands and working conditions are subject to the requirements of a Sergeant, but the exposure is very intermittent. The majority of the working time is spent in an office setting and consists of light work. Physical work involves hands-on training of officers on numerous topics as well as building/range maintenance.

  • No. The Fargo Police Department provides its own paid academy training to each of its new hires. The Fargo Police Academy is an 18-week training program fully certified by the North Dakota Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (NDPOST).
  • In 2022, The Fargo Police Department began hiring candidates prior to the academy. Candidates are now applying for a job as a Fargo Police Officer rather than just completing the Academy as a standalone.
  • Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The Fargo Police Training and Development Unit will help you determine the best start date for you. 

There’s several helpful ways to prepare for our hiring process:

  1. First, an in-person meeting with a recruiter is a great opportunity to learn more about the agency and get helpful advice on interviewing and the hiring process as a whole.
  2. Second, a ride-along with one of our Officers is a great way to gain exposure to our department and what our Officers do on a day-to-day basis. A recruiter can help set up a ride-along on a date and time most convenient for you.
  3. Third, take a look through our social media channels and their content. There you will find great insight into our academy and department.
